SUMMER DISCOVERY CAMPS 2009

 

 


 

CMC Summer Discovery Camps are designed for children ages 4-6 years. All camps are one week sessions, Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. to Noon. Optional Lunch Bunch! session available Noon to 2 p.m. daily. Camps include themed art projects, science experiments, outdoor exploration and free-play in the exhibit galleries.

 

 

Pre-registration for all camps is required. Space is limited - class size is limited to the first 22 children to register. *Note: Snacks will NOT be provided, please pack for your child every day. ENROLLMENT COST:

$99.00 per child/camp for CMC members

$115.00 for non-members

 

*Note: Cancellations made prior to 14 days before the start of camp will be refunded (minus a $5 processing fee). Changes will be charged a $5 processing fee. We reserve the right to refuse or discontinue an individual's participation if his/her welfare or the welfare of others is in jeopardy.

Blast Off! (Session #1) ~ June 15-19

CAMP FULL!

3-2-1! Away we go! Astronauts will explore the planets, the stars, the moon and more. We’ll learn about gravity and build rocket ships and then blast into space to discover the amazing world in the sky. Astronauts will use art, math and science as they journey through outer space. Imaginations will soar when children invent and design their own planet. “Only one small step for parents, one giant leap for your child’s curiosity!”

Dinosaur Dig ~ June 22-26

CAMP FULL!

Become a paleontologist! All paleontologists will practice observation and excavation skills, learn about extinction and uncover the mysteries of dinosaurs buried deep beneath the earth. We’ll crack open rocks to search for dinosaur bones, and then figure out as much as we can about how the dinos lived. We’ll even experience and create our own active volcanoes.

Superhero Science ~ June 29-July 3

Calling all Superheroes for the adventure of the year! We’ll use teamwork, creativity, science and expert problem solving to save the museum from the Mysterious Toy Thief! All superheroes will expand their imaginations and crime fighting skills by learning how to dust for fingerprints, creating Superhero Mobiles, and designing their own costumes.

Princess Science ~ July 6-10

Girls will transform into princesses using science, math, art, cleverness and teamwork. Princesses will build their own castles, design a crown and wand set, and participate in a Princess Fashion Show. All princesses will use chemistry to create soap, lip gloss and jewelry. We’ll learn some art techniques that seem magical and even get to make special gifts for friends and family!

Art Adventures ~ July 13-17

Let’s travel around the world to explore outstanding art! We’ll visit unique places like Southern France, Peru, Japan, Easter Island, and Tibet! As children become inspired to create their own artwork, we’ll learn a variety of techniques from painting to weaving. Children will express their inner creativity while simultaneously opening the door to an entire world of art and cultures around the globe.

Go, Safari, Go! ~ July 20-24

Get your gear together and put on your backpacks. We’re going on a safari adventure through the continent of Africa to find exotic animals. We’ll head to Nairobi National Park to find black rhinos, the African Savannahs to search for cheetahs and lions, and Serengeti National Park to learn about gazelles, zebras and of course- elephants. From big to small, we’ll explore animal adaptations and compare these exotic creatures to some that live in our own backyards!

Kitchen Chemistry ~ July 27-31

Get ready to get messy! Kids will experiment, explode, and even concoct their own kitchen creations. Young chefs will have the opportunity to explore their culinary creativity in a safe and nurturing environment. All chefs will use math and science to measure, chop, cut, cool and heat food. We’ll also perform science experiments using basic kitchen ingredients! Snack provided during camp.

Blast Off! (Session #2) ~ August 3-7

Be a Builder ~ August 10-14

Hard hats required! Children will explore how balance, shape, size and weight affect the stability of their constructions. We’ll learn how to use basic tools, and then build racecars, rockets, boats and birdhouses. Using science, math, innovation and invention, children will make their creative designs come to reality. Play tool belts and hard hats provided.

 

 

JOIN THE LUNCH BUNCH

Lunch Bunch! This is an optional 2 hour extension to camp for families who need flexibility or
just can’t get enough of CMC. Kids who participate in Lunch Bunch! will bring their own lunch to the museum and participate in counselor supervised crafts, games and free play in the museum
from Noon- 2:00 pm. Register for Lunch Bunch! anywhere from 1-5 days a week!

FAQs:

Frequently Asked Questions

 

     1) Is there a snack time? Yes, around 10:30 am. Campers must provide their own snack. Refrigerator available.


     2) What if my child has an allergy? We kindly ask caregivers not to pack nut products for snack or lunch. Families are welcome to leave allergy medication or epi-pens with Lead Counselor.


     3) Is there a discount for more than one child? Unfortunately, no. There is a great member discount!


     4) How many kids are in each camp? There is a limit of 22 campers per session with 5 counselors.


     5) Will the children have free play in the exhibits? Yes. Upon arrival to camp, before the museum is open to the general public.


     6) Will the campers be interacting with regular museum guests? Not during regular camp hours. However, children who stay for Lunch Bunch! will have counselor-supervised play time throughout the museum.
